Mr First Car
s
The above car was the first I owned a 1950 Chevrolet 2 dr Business Coup. I wish I could find a picture of it, but it was lost over time if I had one. The above video is of a deluxe rendition of what I owned so it isn't an exact repressive of it. From what I can remember is it's color was a really bad light green. The engine was Chevrolet's 6-cylinder engine with a 3-speed transmission.
I remember my dad taking me to a dealer in Excelsior, MN which is a short distance from my hometown of Hopkins. My dad told me the dealership was owned by a classmate of his in school The sale's man who showed us the above car I assumed was the owner because my dad seemed to know him. Told us that the car's previous owner was an "older woman" which is a car dealer's sales pitch. The asking price was around $500 but I wasn't ready to put my name on the dotted line I guess I wanted something better. So the owner told my dad and me why don't we take it home for a few days and try it out to see what we thought (can you imagine that happening in today's world) so we took it home I tested it out for over a week before we brought it back. What I found out during the testing trial it was burning over a quart every hundred miles.
Well we took the car back to the dealership and told the owner that we didn't think we should buy it. well, the owner came back and asked us if they would rebuild the engine would we be willing to pay half. You kind of have to remember this is in 1955 and the car drove and handled really nice and the body had no rust the seats were in very good condition so I told him with my dad's approval that I would buy it.
It took several weeks before we received a phone call telling us the car was ready so to Excelsior we went to pick it up and pay for the car the bill came to $68 more than we agreed on and to this day I believe he only charged for parts with no labor. I drove that car for several years and never burned oil and I knew the guy I sold it to loved it as much as I did. That is my first car-buying experience.
